At Blue Express, Levi's denim is one of the most popular sections, but it’s easy to get confused between numbers and fit names. This guide lines up the styles you ask us about most: 501, 501 '81, 551Z and Wedgie.
Levi's 501 Original: the starting point
This is the jeans style it all began with: straight leg, button fly and non-stretch cotton that takes on the wearer’s shape over time. It works for both men and women and goes with everything. If you don’t know where to start, start here.
Levi's 501 '81: the high-waisted women's 501
The 501 '81 is inspired by the first women's 501, released in 1981. Compared with the classic 501, it has the highest rise in the 501 family, is slightly fitted at the waist and softer around the hips, with a more tapered leg that gathers slightly at the ankle. It has smaller, higher back pockets. These are the right jeans if you’re looking for an '80s-inspired look that elongates the figure.
Levi's 551Z Authentic Straight: more comfortable, still straight
The 551Z is a roomier men's fit than the 501: straight but relaxed, with more room through the hips and thighs and a zip fly instead of buttons. It’s the choice for anyone who wants comfortable denim with a vintage feel, without going all the way to a baggy fit. Ideal with chunky sneakers and oversized sweatshirts.
Levi's Wedgie Straight: high rise and a straight leg for her
The Wedgie is a women's fit with a high rise, snug through the hips and seat, and a straight leg that falls cleanly to the ankle. It enhances the silhouette and looks great with both sneakers and heels.
In short: which one to choose
- You want a timeless classic → 501.
- Women's, high rise, '80s-inspired look → 501 '81.
- Men's, straight but comfortable → 551Z.
- Women's, high rise and an elongating straight leg → Wedgie.
Sizing advice
Rigid cotton fits, such as the 501, loosen up a little with wear: if you’re between two waist sizes, many people choose the smaller one. For roomier fits such as the 551Z, you can choose your usual size.
The safest approach is still to try them on: at our stores in central Verona, Adigeo, Affi (Lake Garda) and WaltherPark Bolzano, we’ll help you find the right fit and size. Online, you can find the full selection in the Levi's collection.
