Red Wing Shoes has been making boots in Red Wing, Minnesota, since 1905. They were originally made for miners and workers, using leather tanned at the company's own tannery, S.B. Foot, Goodyear welt construction, and soles that can be replaced multiple times. Today, they are among the world's most sought-after heritage boots, and at Blue Express you'll find key models from the Heritage line. Here's how to navigate the models, choose your size, and care for them.
Red Wing models to know
- Classic Moc 875 Oro Legacy: the most famous model, with a hand-sewn moc toe and a white Traction Tred crepe sole. Oro Legacy leather is honey-colored and darkens over time. It's the quintessential Red Wing boot. Classic Moc 875 Oro Legacy
- Classic Moc 8849 Black Prairie: same shape as the 875, but in black leather, making it more understated and easy to style in the city. Classic Moc 8849 Black Prairie
- Classic Moc 8138 Briar Oil Slick and 8836 Chocolate Muleskinner: the dark brown versions, in oiled leather (Briar) or rough suede (Muleskinner). Classic Moc Briar Oil Slick · Classic Moc Chocolate Muleskinner
- Iron Ranger: the other great classic. Originally made for iron miners, it has a double-layer reinforced toe (cap toe), a thinner nitrile cork sole, and a sleeker profile than the Classic Moc. Available in Amber Harness leather (light brown) and Black Harness.
- Red Wing women's: the 6 Inch Moc Toe models 3373 (black) and 3375 (Oro Legacy) take after the Classic Moc, with a fit designed for women's feet, in sizes 36 to 40. Moc Toe 3375 Oro Legacy · Moc Toe 3373 Black Boundary
Classic Moc or Iron Ranger?
The Classic Moc is softer and more cushioned thanks to its crepe sole. It has a wider fit and a relaxed workwear feel: perfect with straight or wide-leg jeans and Carhartt WIP pants. The L'Iron Ranger is more structured, with a reinforced toe and a harder sole. It has a dressier, edgier look and pairs well with slim or straight-leg jeans, chinos, and leather or waxed jackets like Barbour. Both last for years and can be resoled.
How to choose your Red Wing size
Red Wing boots run large: as a general rule, choose half a size smaller than your usual sneaker size. The Classic Moc is roomy in the toe, while the Iron Ranger is slightly narrower. Sizes use US sizing, but on our website they’re already converted to EU (men’s 39–45, women’s 36–40). The leather is stiff for the first few days, and the heel may move a little: this is normal; after a week or two of wear, the boot will mold to your foot. If you’re unsure, come try them on in store.
How to care for Red Wing boots
- Cleaning: brush off dust with a horsehair brush and use Leather Cleaner for tougher dirt. Don’t use too much water.
- Conditioning: every 1–2 months (or when the leather looks dry), apply a thin layer of Mink Oil or All Natural Boot Oil to oiled leathers such as Oro Legacy, Amber Harness, and Briar. For suede leathers (Muleskinner), use only a brush and, if needed, a protective spray.
- Resting: alternate between pairs and let the boots dry at room temperature, never near radiators. Cedar shoe trees help maintain their shape and absorb moisture.
- Resoling: thanks to the Goodyear welt construction, when the sole wears out, a cobbler can replace it without touching the upper. A well-maintained pair can last over ten years.
- Patina: scratches and color changes are part of Red Wing’s charm. A little oil and brushing will even out the leather, but signs of wear are intentional.
Frequently asked questions
Are Red Wing boots waterproof? No, but the oiled leathers hold up well in light rain and snow. For extra protection, use Mink Oil.
Are they comfortable right away? They’re stiff for the first few days: wear them at home for a few hours a day with thick socks, and they’ll become some of the most comfortable boots you’ll own.
Where are they made? Heritage styles such as the Classic Moc and Iron Ranger are made in the United States, in Red Wing, Minnesota.
